Graduate Research Fellowship Program

contact us

The purpose of the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program is to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and to reinforce its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in the relevant science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees, including women in engineering and computer and information science. NSF Fellows are expected to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. These individuals will be crucial to maintaining and advancing the nation's technological infrastructure and national security as well as contributing to the economic well-being of society at large.

So that the nation can build fully upon the strength and creativity of a diverse society, the Foundation welcomes applications from all qualified individuals and strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons with disabilities to compete fully in this program.

The deadline for the 2008 Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) has passed. Applicants for the 2008 GRFP will be notified of the results in late March.

You will also need to send us a hard copy of your official transcript for your baccalaureate institution and any graduate institution with a start date earlier than Fall 2007. All transcripts should be sent to:
GRF Operations Center
1818 N Street NW
Suite T-50

Transcripts must be received by the application deadline.

Eligibility
Applicants must not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study or the equivalent. The following applicants are typically eligible for the GRFP:

Applicants who have completed more than 12 months of graduate study may be considered eligible depending on certain extenuating circumstances, such as a significant change in field or interruption of studies for more than two years. The eligibility of such applicants is determined on a case-by-case basis, only upon review of a complete, submitted application.

For a complete list of NSF-supported fields of study, please see the 2008 GRFP Program Solicitation (link will be provided once it is published by NSF).

Evaluation of applications
Applications are evaluated based on two broad merit review criteria: Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts. Applications are reviewed holistically: the entire application is considered during the evaluation. Successful applications will address both merit review criteria thoroughly. View the 2007 rating sheet (pdf format).

Applications are reviewed by disciplinary panels that are made up of knowledge experts in the primary field of study. Each application receives two reviews, with evaluations being recorded on rating sheets.

After the outcome of the GRFP competition is announced (in the Spring of each year), you will be able to view your rating sheets online.
